Sally Port Mess
Regulations
- The focus of the Sally Port Mess is to portray the common western Union soldier accurately at events in Michigan, regional and national events. We do this by researching the lives of the men that we do our best to represent. Taking thus knowledge, we apply it to the equipment we buy and the attitude we have when in the field.
- Every member shall respect their fellow messmates as historians and reenactors. We are comrades in arms away from and at events. We rely on each other when living, cooking, drilling and fighting together as Civil War soldiers at events.
- We will strive to keep politics out of the Sally Port Mess as much as possible. Politics are not to control the mess nor should it inhibit members from enjoying their Civil War experience.
- Meetings and drills will be scheduled on a needed basis by the members of the Sally Port Mess.
- All decisions, including, but not limited to, event selection, guidelines, regulations, ect., shall be voted on by members of the Sally Port Mess. A unanimous vote is preferred. If this can not be obtained and a decision must be made the Mess will go with the majority.
- New members must attend two events with the Sally Port Mess to be eligible for membership. After this, the established membership will will vote on the prospective member’s admission. Once voted into the Sally Port Mess, they will have full rights and privileges as all other members.
- We will have no permanent non-commissioned or company grade officers within or for the mess. If needed, before each event the group will decide who will be the ranking non-commissioned officer for that event. Rank structure will be adjusted as needed.
- Our mess must also lead by providing a good example. We should always strive to improve our impressions and encourage others to do the same without passing judgment on them.
